Van Gogh to his brother Theo
"Art is jealous, she doesn`s like taking the second place in indisposition. Hence I shall humor her... What I want and have as my aim is infernally difficult to achieve, and yet I don`t think I am raising my sights too high. I want to drawings that touch some people."

동생 테오에게 빈센트 반 고흐가 보냄

"예술은 질투라네, 기분이 언짢기로 두 번째 가라고 하면 예술이 서러워할 거야. 이 사실로 인해 내가 예술의 비위를 맞추려는 것이라네…
내가 이루고자 가진 목표는 것은 성취하기가 지독하게 어려운 것이라네, 그렇다고 내가 나의 통찰력을 너무 높이고 있다고 생각하진 않네.
내가 원하는 것은 사람들에게 감동을 주는 그림을 그리고 싶다는 것이라네.”

"What I find such a pleasant surprise about painting is that you can, with the same effect you put into a drawing, take something home with you that conveys the impression much better and is much more pleasing to look at. And at the same time more acdurate, too. In a word, it is more rewarding than drawing.
But it is absolutely essential to be able to draw the proportions correctly and to position the objects fairly confidently before you start. If you make a mistake here, it will all come to nothing."
