In contrast to Platos theory, Hegel has a little bit different structure than Plato. He describes that self-reflection of the absolute Idea (formally known as God and Eidos) is the world itself, and the history of the world is all about reconciliation of this self-reflection to be the pure Idea once again. He argued that whole reality equals Concept, which is happening in our head. The theory starts off with nothing but the absolute Essence. And because the Idea was alone, it started to be curious about what is absolute itself, so it projected itself and created self-reflection, which is the world. The world of self-reflection allowed the absolute Idea to be aware of itself, but the truth of it was still covered with a large mass of materiality. And the progress of reconciliation is represented as the form of art, that art history shows how the absolute Essence has been transformed throughout the centuries. Hegel says the content of art is the Idea, while its form is the configuration of sensuous material (Ross 144), which means that art is another representation of absolute Idea. Thus art history shows the process that the Idea to finding real itself through dematerialization. Hegel insisted there are three main stages that art progresses: Symbolic (symbol and architecture) to Classical (sculpture) to Romantic (painting, music, and poetry) and when these stages end, the history of art ends and the reconciliation is about to completed.
