Willem de Kooning who is most compared with Jackson Pollock in terms of both stature and influence once said that “Jackson broke the ice.” These four words describe the story of American art during the 20th century more fully than and book ever written on the period or its legacy. More than 50 years later, Pollock is still considered as the greatest artist. And when I first saw the painting entitled “Number one: Lavender Mist”, I was pretty shocked because of the scale and the completely different style from other works. I became wondering about the fact that “Is he the greatest living painter in the United States?” as Life magazine published in August 1949.
