본문내용
1. Walt Whitman
Even though his work Leaves of Grass was attacked by many critics at that time, it is one of the best works in American literature. He experienced many things from early job, instead of school education. He concerned about curiosity of daily life. He liked to use two words, “sing” and “absorb.” Leaves of Grass shows that his country’s change. He regarded reality as a continuous flow. In other words, he denied the “completeness.”
Song of Myself is his long poem with his major theme. He thought “self” contains everything, and “expansion” is significant. He made American Poets escape from the old English traditions. In his essay, A Backward Glance o’er Travel’d Roads, he wanted to make a thoroughly new American poetic expansion. He thought message was more significant than form. He preferred to use free verse, not rhyme, meter, and stanza. He was opposed to use poetic ornament. He believed that Americans have to undertake responsibility for the future happiness of mankind even in the Civil War. He supported the North strongly, and he worked as a nurse in Virginia.
