When I read Guy the Maupassant's "The Necklace" as a high school student, I felt that Mathilde, the protagonist, is just a pathetic and unlucky woman. But after reading "The Necklace" once again, my thoughts about Mathilde changed. I think Mathilde is not just pathetic and unlucky but silly and unreliable. Even though she could find the happiness nearby herself, she could not see that. This is because she saw the world through her own glasses of vanity. There are two reason why I think of her like that. First of all, Mathilde used to daydream about living in opulence. However her dreams are not real but just a groundless fancy. Secondly, Mathilde constantly wants to look beautiful. This means that she is always concerning other people's eyes.
Mathilde is dissatisfied with all the circumstances where she belongs to. This is because of her refusal to accept her relatively low, but not absolutely, economic level of living that will never meet her high standards and expectations. I could find this aspect of Mathilde in some sentences that Guy the Maupassant used to describe her in the story.
