GAPDH 유전자는 glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate 탈수소효소 단백질 계열의 구성원을 암호화한다. 암호화된 단백질은 기계적으로 구별되는 능력을 기반으로 월광 단백질로 확인되었다. 이 유전자의 산물은 무기 인산염과 nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD)의 존재 하에서 glyceraldehyde- 3-phosphate의 가역적 산화적 인산화인 탄수화물 대사에서 중요한 에너지 생성 단계를 촉매한다.
