Son Yang-won, who served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church and became a martyr, was born on June 3, 1902, in Guseong-ri, Chilwon-myeon, Haman-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, South Korea. He was the eldest son of his parents, Son Jong-il and Kim Eun-su, and had two younger brothers. He was also known by the name "San-dol."

From 1908, Son Yang-won began attending Sunday school with his parents. In 1913, he entered Chilwon Public Elementary School and received baptism from missionary F.J.L. Macrae during the third grade.
