Ⅰ. Background of M&A
(1) Daum
Daum started as Internet Venture Business in 1995. Its initial business model was Intranet Development Service and income from this service was invested to Internet Service. In 1997, the company unveiled a free e-mail service called ‘Hanmail’ which was free and convenient to use compared to mail based on paid PC communication at the time. Also, Daum launched ‘Café’ service based on about 1 million members of Hanmail. Success from Hanmail and Café service made Daum Korean No.1 portal site. However, since Hanmail’s popularity waned, Daum gave up its first place portal share to Naver with ‘Knowledge In(지식 In)’ in 2003 and the gap has been steadily widened, Daum falling to No.2 in later years.
