All in all, Levin indicates that kindness creates connections even between strangers through empathy toward the poor, whereas Eggers points out the moral obligation of those capable of helping to offer kindness under any circumstances. Although these two distinct stories narrate two different aspects of kindness, the two narratives ultimately convey a strong message that kindness is a moral duty of compassion for all who are capable of helping. Just as a gem cannot be polished without friction, so it is that men cannot be happier without giving kindness.
