The way that medieval people conceived of plague - including its symptoms and how it was transmitted from one person, region, or community to another - is largely foreign to our modern approach to disease. And yet, some medieval medical theories - such as that the groin, armpits, and neck served as “emunctories ,” or drainage points, for plague matter - are remarkably prescient. Nonetheless, as mentioned in the introduction, some scholars believe that there is an “unbridgeable gap” between the premodern concept of plague and the modern, “laboratory construction ” of the disease - that is, one based on the identification of microorganisms in infected victims.
