Historicist design is for one and Modern design is for all. As technology and work labor improved after the Industrial revolution, workplaces became busier to accommodate many more people at a time. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Chair (1936/39) is a great example that demonstrates the goals of Modern design. Meanwhile, Edward Newman’s Master’s Chair of Joiner’s Company (1754) portrays the ambition of Historicism. While both chair designs are solid in color and are commissioned for users in working environments, the simplicity and compact quality of Wright’s office chair strives to save production time and budget whereas the detailed and grandeur of Newman’s Master’s chair seeks to bring back Christian belief, express the significance of its user.
Wright’s use of solid color for the chair is intended for its effectiveness to embellish despite cheaper and quicker production. First of all, the chair appears red overall.
