1) 카리브해몽크물범 [Caribbean Monk Seal or West Indian monk seal] ; 또는 카리브해수도사물범이라고도 부른다.
카리브해몽크물범(또는 카리브해수도사물범이라고 불리는)은 동물계 – 척삭동물문 – 포유류강 – 식육목 – 물범과에 속하며 학명은 ‘Monachus tropicalis’이다. NMFS(National Mortality Followback Survey, 미국 국립해양수산청)은 수차례의 검토 끝에 지난 2008년, 카리브해몽크물범 종은 멸종되었다고 결론지었으며 세계자연보전연맹(ICUN)에 따르면 현재 카리브해몽크물범의 멸종위기등급은 절멸(EX:Extinct)로 완전히 멸종되어 전 세계 어디서도 찾아볼 수 없게 되었다.

[특징]
카리브해몽크물범의 수명은 약 20년 정도이며 몸길이는 약 200~240cm, 무게는 약 160kg~200kg에 달하고 상당히 크고 단단한 몸에 독특한 머리와 얼굴 형태를 가지고 있다고 알려졌다. 머리는 넓은 코-주둥이 부분으로 둥글게 되어있으며 앞지느러미는 상대적으로 짧은 반면에 뒷지느러미는 가느다란 특징을 가지고 있었다. 또한, 등 부분보다 하부가 더 가벼워 몸의 빛깔은 갈색이거나 회색이었는데 다 자란 성체의 경우에는 피부색이 창백하고 노란 새끼들보다 색깔이 어두운 경향이 있었다. 몇몇 표본에 따르면 카리브해몽크물범은 털가죽에서 자라는 해조류 때문에 녹색으로 보이기도 했고 이들은 물속을 원활하게 보기 위한 적갈색의 커다란 눈을 가지고 있었다.
