While most of the developing world has managed to reduce poverty, especially in East Asia, and are in the process of making the world a better place to live on, we are still facing the ‘bottom billion’ which doesn’t show the smallest quiver. Though there are numerous countries which still remain in the ‘bottom billion’, its majority is known as sub-Saharan Africa. The poverty rate in sub-Saharan Africa has not changed in the past 25 years. Since the late 80s, it is still remaining as the world’s poorest region. As proved in the report of the World Bank, half of the population in sub-Saharan Africa is living under the condition of ‘extreme poverty’-living on less than 1 dollar a day since 1981. To a number of big donor countries, which have spent years of aiding aggressively in order to combat global poverty, this report should be unpleasant and even frustrating to face. How could sub-Saharan Africa still struggle for food and beg for more aid when they have been receiving the same help for decades?
