Characteristics of CRPS
Evidence of overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system
Sensory symptoms
Severe pain & sensory abnormality in extremity
Motor symptoms
Weakness
Dystonia
Postural action tremor
Accompanied by disuse - contractures of the limbs
Definition of CRPS
Based on four criteria (IASP)
1. The pain should be disproportionate to initiating event
2. The pain should be characterized by allodynia or hyperpathia and should be spontaneous
3. The pain should be accompanied by autonomic dysfunction such as edema, skin blood-flow abnormalities, sudomotor asymmetries, or trophic changes
4. All other reasonable etiologies should be excluded
