Title: Cell division and Barr body
Introduction:
Cell division of a eukaryotic cell is complex and consists of many steps. This is because there are many chromosomes in the cell nucleus, and each eukaryotic chromosome consists of a DNA molecule plus associated protein molecules. In non-dividing cells, chromosomes are extended and uncoiled so they are not visible as distinct structures. During the prophase of cell division, the chromosomes condense to form rod-shaped bodies that are visible with a light microscope. Also during prophase, the nuclear membrane and nucleolus disappear, each pair of centrioles migrates to opposite ends of the cell, and the spindle forms. Each pair of centrioles and its radiating astral rays constitute an aster at each pole of the spindle. During metaphase, the chromosomes line up at the equator of the spindle. The sister chromatids of each replicated chromosome are attached to separate spindle fibers via kinetochores on their centromeres.
