1. 연구의 중요성
중동에서 메르스가 발생한지 약 3년 만에 국내로 유입되고, 2015년 5월 20일 국내에서 첫 중동호흡기증후군 (Middle East respiratory syndrome, MERS; 메르스) 확진 환자가 발생한 것을 시작으로 현재 2016년 11월 24일 기준으로 총 186명의 확진자가 있었고, 사망자 38명, 완치자 148명, 최대 격리자가 16,752명까지 이르는 등 지난해 심각한 사회적 문제로 대두되었다. 메르스 환자의 대부분은 병원에서 감염되었으며, 의료기관 종사자의 비중이 13.4%를 차지하였고, 주로 메르스 환자는 서울, 경기도와 대전·충남지역에 집중적으로 분포하였다.

현대사회는 대중교통 및 이동수단의 발달로 전 세계가 지구촌화 되었고, 이로 인하여 국가 간 유동인구가 증가하여 특정 지역에서의 감염병이 한 지역에 국한되지 않고, 범세계적으로 확산되고 있다.
