Bignell’s “Surveillance” and L.K. Lundy, Ruth and Park’s “Simply Irresistible: Reality TV Consumption Patterns” discuss the morality of reality television shows. However, reality programs have become such an integral part of the broadcasting industry that people do not realize they are watching reality television. Reality shows such as Survivor or Big Brothers contain manipulation and give physical and emotional harms to participants but the audience cannot stop watching it. The audience had become used to watching reality television which is “morally corrupt” by violating rights of participants in the program and misrepresenting reality (Lundy et al. 32). [how are these points connected?]
First of all, the contestants of reality programs are subjected to physical harms in the shows. According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, “No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment of punishment” (Bignell 69).
