Born in Gijón, Spain, Diana Balmori spent most of her childhood in Spain and England before her family settled in Argentina. Her mother Dorothy Ling (born in England) was a musician and musicologist. Her father Clemente Hernando Balmori (born in Spain) was a linguistic experts. At an early age Diana Balmori learned to sing, dance, play piano, and her parents encouraged her to explore a wide range of mediums. She brought many of these influences with her to the design world.

스페인에서 태어난 다이아나 발모리는 그녀의 유년시절 대부분을 스페인과 영국에서 보냈으며 그 후 아르헨티나에 정착하였다. 그녀의 어머니 도로시 링(영국 출생)은 음악가 겸 음악학자였고 그녀의 아버지 클레멘테 에르난도 발모리(스페인 출생)는 언어학자였다.
그녀의 부모는 어린 시절의 발모리에게 노래,춤,피아노를 배우게 했으며, 다양한 표현방식을 기르도록 했다. 이것은 그녀의 디자인 세계 형성에 많은 영향을 주었다.

She graduated from high school at the age of 16 and studied at the Architecture School at the National University of Tucumán in Argentina in the undergraduate program, and then emigrated to the United States. Balmori continued her education at the University of California at Los Angeles, earning her Ph.D in Urban History. After graduation, she entered the world of academia, accepting a teaching position at the State University of New York and holding undergraduate seminars in Landscape History at Yale School of Architecture.

그녀는 16세의 나이에 고등학교를 졸업하고 아르헨티나의 투쿠만 대학에서 공부한 뒤 미국으로 이주했다. 그 후 발모리는 LA의 캘리포니아 대학에서 공부를 계속하여 도시역사학 박사학위를 취득하였다.
졸업 후 그녀는 뉴욕 주립대학에서 교수직을 수락하여 학계에 입문하였고, 예일대학 건축학과에서 조경사 강의를 하였다.
