Written in 1883, Maupassant’s “The Jewelry” is a short story depicting how the protagonist changes from a naive to a materialistic character after realizing the immorality of his wife. The characterization of M. Lantin, the main character, is shown through the indirect characterization, mainly through the change of his speech, thoughts, and attitude.
Lantin is a middle-class man having a stable job as a “chief clerk in the office of the Minister of the Interior, with a salary of 3,500 francs a year.” Because of his midlevel bureaucratic wage, he obtains a beautiful wife who seems to appear as the “ideal of pure good woman.”
At first, Lantin appears to be a naive man who is indifferent to extravagance.
