The Education for Raising the Independent Individual
The main character, Jane Eyre is an entirely original and unprecedented woman in Victorian Era. Her master, Mr. Rochester asks her a question that “Do you think me handsome?” (130) and she replies, “No, sir.” (131). She seems to be a masculine woman rather than a feminine one, because she tends to prefer directly and honestly saying to indirectly and insincerely flattering. She also has experienced a lot of miserable accident such as the early death of parents and the first friend, Helen, the farewell to Miss Temple, the failure of her marriage and so on.

Bronte implies that there are great hardships for Mr. Rochester and Jane in the picture and song. Above all, three pictures have a dreary atmosphere. The used color is dark and gloomy. Especially, there are “a drowned corse”, “a fair arm” and “an eye hollow” (125) in Jane’s picture. A drowned corse can be interpreted as devastated Mr. Rochester, and a fair arm and an eye hollow as his future adversity. Additionally, he sings a song: “Her coming”, “Her parting”, “pathless”, “My love has placed her little hand” and “My love has sworn” (271, 272). Moreover, Jane tells herself that “pluck out your right eye; yourself cut off your right hand” (297). The word comes true not for her but him.
