본문내용
People want to know themselves: who they are, where they belong, how to live, and what to do. Then, through self-examination, they become aware of themselves. This is their “identity”. Identity is influenced by one’s race, language, people, and especially culture.
When I read “Talking in the New Land” and “The Achievement of Desire”, I thought about the authors’ identities. In the USA there are a lot of families in which two kinds of cultures coexist. It makes that immigrant family’s children become confused about their own personality earlier than normal children who usually establish their own identity during puberty. I believe that one’s identity is set by the culture in which a person has lived. If people create their identities with a firm belief based on a living culture, they would not suffer from the many conflicts caused by confusion of their identity for a long time. First of all, it is important that 1st generation parents understand their children’s confusion and help them to create/find their identity.
