1. The Auteur and Asian Extreme Cinema
In recent years the most liked and hyped movies from East Asia in the West can be described as “Asian Extreme Cinema” (Chung, 96). The characteristics of this genre are violent, blood-soaked, sexual, and horror/terror glorified (Chung, 101). In this context for example Park Chan-wook from South Korea is mentioned as “extreme” filmmaker (Chung, 96).
Park Chan-woo got great popularity after he won with his movie Oldboy the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2004 (Lee, 201). Remarkable is that Quentin Tarantino was part of the jury because of his 10 th anniversary of winning the festival’s Palme d’Or for his movie Pulp Fiction. It was expected that Oldboy is exactly the kind of movie Tarantino likes and we can draw a line between this two directors because they are “cult auteur ” of “aesthetics and excessive style of extreme and violent B-movies” (Lee, 212) .
