1. The elements of a prescription for heat or cold
- Indication or diagnosis
- Modality
- Location : large area preclude the use of modalities such as ultrasound / ice massage
- Intensity : for safty, rely on patient perception of thermal intensity
- Duration : mostly 20-30min, except ultrasound (5-10min per site)
- Frequency : based on the severity of the condition being treated
cf) Surface : If irregular surface, radiant heat > hot packs, heating pad, ultrasound

2. Factors to consider in modality selection
- Target tissue ( heating or cooling capabilities)
- Depth of heating or cooling desired
- Intensity of heating or cooling desired
- Body habitus (i.e. subcutaneous adipose->affects the depth of modalities’ penetration)
- Comorbid conditions (e.g. cancer, vascular disease, neuropathy)
- Specific patient features( e.g. metal implants, pacemaker, cold allergy)
- Age (e.g. ultrasound, avoided near open epiphyses)
- Sex (e.g. pregnant women)
