INTRODUCTION
The narrative style of Jazz is one which is considerably unique and unconventional, which is a new modern style of narration. Unlike many of the styles of narration in previous books, Tony Morrison attempts to use a different style of narration, that which is unstable, oscillating, and confusing to the reader. First, the narrator is unidentifiable; at times the identity of the narrator seems to become clear while at other times she becomes vague again. Second, the narrator seems to move in and out of the lives of the characters—at times she seems part of the community, one of the individual characters but at other times she seems to become a celestial identity observing from above. Third, another unique narrating technique Tony Morrison uses is the fragmentation and repetition of narrating out the story. The narration moves back and forth without chronological order and at times the same scene is repeated through different perspectives. Fourth, there is no set opinion or perspective of the narrator in this book. Her opinions and views are flexible and changing all the time.
