Have you experienced culture shock? Actually, I like travelling abroad. So I have visited many countries by myself so I could experience a lot of culture directly. Now, I have lived in the United States for nine months. I wanted to go to the United States because many students went there and I wanted to know how different the United States was from Korea. Eventually, I came to Boston alone and I have found a chance to experience a different culture. After I came to Boston, I wanted a lot of challenges and I gradually felt a lot of differences between Korea and America. The two largest differences I found were in people’s understanding of sex and of family relationship. I found different ideas about sex in school, in relationships among friends and in the movies I found differences in family relationships through talking to people around me.
First of all, how students think of sex was completely different. In the United States, the term sex is, to my surprise, freely used. For instance, I heard from my friend who was Korean and graduated from high school in the United States, that the schools would even distribute condoms to the students to prevent STD (sexually transmitted diseases). The idea of sex is very healthy and is thought of as a natural human process. However, when I was a high school student in Korea, I thought that the term sex was considered a forbidden term that shouldn`t be used in public. When my friend came back to Korea, he said to me, “I was extremely surprised because many teachers and students in the United States want to mention that sex is the natural human process and even in sex education, it seemed to me that the students and the teachers were fully comfortable with the subject.”
