The Arthur of "The Cask of Amontillado," Edgar Allan Poe, was born to traveling actors in Boston in 1809. From the young age, Poe had very struggled life. "The Cask of Amontillado" was first appeared in the November 1846 issue of Godey`s Lady`s Book. "The Cask of Amontillado" is a story about Montresor’s revenge to Fortunato. The murderer Montresor is a key character in this story. The story starts with his motivation to murder, and the story ends with Montresor’s satisfaction for killing Fortunato. "The Cask of Amontillado" is basically a monological speech by Montresor. Although Montresor does not mention about why he revenges to Fortunato, he explains how he kills or revenges to Fortunato. While he’s in a processing of his revenge, he reveals his some of characteristics.Thus, his thought and feelings uncover his other characteristics. He is very determining person. As he decides to revenge, he thinks, “A wrong is unredressed when retribution overtakes its redresser. It is equally unredressed when the avenger fails to make himself felt as such to him who has done the wrong” (Poe 124). He certainly has a strong will. Therefore, he seems to be a bit sadistic. He says, “The noise lasted for several minutes, during which, that I might hearken to it with the more satisfaction, I ceased my labors and sat down upon the bones” (Poe 128).
