IntroductionThe US cruise industry has been into ups and down for the last three four decades. But many changes have taken place in the industry. Rather than a mode for conveyance it has become a place for enjoyment. Simultaneously the amenities available in the cruises also have changed. Swimming pools spa and world class restaurants is now available in cruises. In this paper while discussing the case of Royal Caribbean Cruises and its competitors, the cruise industry and its scope has been discussed in general. Starting with the brief history of CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) and its members the trends in the industry and its financial condition has been studied. In the following paragraphs the opportunities and problems faced by the industry in general is covered. The changing trends in the industry, its external and internal environment and also the economics in general are discussed in the essay. The interesting part is the position of the firm is studied externally and internally. Considering the status of Royal Caribbean Cruises in the cruise industry the company was taken up for a detailed study. SWOT analysis was conducted to see the strength and weakness of the firm and also the threats and opportunities facing by the firm. To study the external environment tools like Competitors Profile Matrix and External Factor Evaluation Matrix has been used and interpreted. Similarly for internal analysis Internal Factor Evaluation matrix is used. It will be interesting to know the competitive advantage of the firm.
