1970년대의 검열과 연극 상연 (The Censorship and Theater Performances in the 1970s)

초록

본고에서는 <태>, <길>, <카덴자>를 중심으로 하여 이 작품들이 외부적 검열이 극심했던 시대에 검열을 넘어 상연되면서 어떤 방식으로 관객들에게 또 다른 의미를 전달할 수 있었는지를 살펴보았다. 검열을 통과한 작품들 중에는 외부적 검열에 의해서 내용이나 대사의 삭제 등이 이루어진 상태로 상연된 작품들도 있었지만, 그렇지 않고 원래의 희곡대로 상연되면서도 구술적․비구술적 기호들의 총합인 상연을 통해 관객들이 주목하기를 바라는 메시지를 시그널링(signalling) 하는 경우도 있었다.
<태>, <길>, <카덴자>는 모두 세조와 사육신의 이야기를 소재로 함으로써 역사극의 외피를 입고 사전각본심사와 임검심사 모두를 통과했다. 그리고 이를 통해 상연에 성공함으로써 관객들에게 ‘지금-여기’의 이야기를 전달한다. <태>와 <길>이 사회적 문맥 속에서 구술적 기호가 이중성을 갖게 함으로써 당대를 환기시키고 있다면, <카덴자>는 비구술적 기호들을 이용해서 관객들의 무감각함을 깨워 자신이 살고 있는 사회와 시대를 돌아보게 한다.
이 작품들은 모두 역사극의 외피를 입음으로써 외부적 검열을 ‘영리하게’ 피하고 다양한 전달 수단을 활용한 상연을 통해 관객들에게 당대를 환기시킴으로써 생각할 거리를 던져 주었다. 이는 어찌 보면 소극적인 형태의 비판이라고도 볼 수 있으나 1970년대의 현실을 생각한다면 그것만으로도 연극사적 의미를 가진다.

영어초록

Focusing on <Tae>, <Path>, and <Cadenza>, this paper examined how these works were performed beyond censorship in a time when external censorship was severe, and how they were able to convey another meaning to the audience. Among the works that passed the censorship, some were staged with the contents or lines deleted by external censorship, but others met the audience without that and signaled to the audience the message that writers wanted to convey through performances which are the sum of oral and non-oral signs.
<Tae>, <Path>, and <Cadenza> are plays based on the story of King Sejo and Sayuksin, passing through both the pre-script screening and the on-site screening under the skin of a historical drama, and meet the audience and tell them 'now and here' story. While <Tae> and <Path> speak about contemporary events by giving the indicated objects of oral signs duality in the social context, <Cadenza> use non-oral signs to awaken the audience's sense of insensitivity to reflect on the status quo.
All of these works were ‘smart’ to avoid external censorship by wearing the skin of a historical drama, and gave the audience somethings to think about by reminding them about the times through various means of communication at the stage. This can be seen as a passive form of criticism, but considering the reality of the 1970s, it could have meaningful historical value.
