초록

‘희대(戱臺)’는 협률사와 원각사가 상주하며 영업했던 우리나라 최초의 왕립극장이다. 최남선(崔南善)은 이 ‘희대’를 우리나라 최초의 국립극장이라 칭하며 이것의 설립배경은 1902년의 고종황제등극 40주년을 기념하기 위한 ‘칭경예식(稱慶禮式)’이라 했다.
그런데 ꡔ고종임인 진연의궤(高宗壬寅進宴儀軌)ꡕ는 고종황제의 등극(登極) 40주년과 망육순(望六旬, 51세)을 기념하는 ‘진연(進宴)’이 1902년 12월 3일부터 치러진 사실을 기록하고 있다.
이를 근거로 해서 사진실은 본격적인 ‘칭경예식’인 ‘진연’이 1902년 12월에 치러졌다고 보고 ‘칭경예식’을 ‘진연’에 부속된 하나의 예식(禮式)정도로 보고 있다. 사실 ‘칭경예식’을 일회성 ‘예식(禮式)’으로 보는 견해는 이전의 다른 몇몇 연구서들에서도 이미 감지된다. 이들은 ‘칭경예식’을 거행하기 위한 식장(式場) 용도로 ‘희대’가 설치되었다고 보는 것인데, 사진실은 한발 더 나아가서 ‘칭경예식’이 끝난 뒤에는 협률사 영업을 위한 극장공간으로 활용할 것을 염두에 두고 희대를 설립했을 것이라는 견해까지 피력한다.
‘칭경예식’의 성격과 내용에 따라 ‘희대’와 ‘협률사’의 설립목적이 다르게 나타날 수 있기 때문에 ‘칭경예식’에 대한 올바른 이해는 관련 연구에서 매우 중요한 일이다.
본고는 우리나라 최초의 왕립극장인 ‘희대’ 설치의 역사적 배경을 올바로 인식하기 위한 목적을 가지고 ꡔ고종실록ꡕ과 ꡔ승정원일기ꡕ를 중심으로 해서 1902년의 ‘칭경예식’과 ‘진연’의 추진과정을 고찰해보았다.
그 결과, ‘칭경예식’은 대한제국의 근대화된 모습과 그 위상을 서구국가에 과시하려는 고종황제의 정치적인 의도에 따라 군대 사열식, 기념장 수여식, 가든파티 등을 수반한 서구식 의전(儀典)방식의 기념행사로 경운궁(덕수궁)에서 치를 예정이던 외교적인 국가행사였다.
반면에 ‘진연’은 고종황제의 망육순과 어극 40주년이라는 양대 경사를 기념하기 위해 마련된 전통적인 방식의 축하잔치로 대내적인 왕실중심의 행사였다.
원래는 1902년 10월 4일(음 9. 3)에 내진연을 시작으로 하는 ‘진연’을 마치고, 10월 18일(음 9. 17)부터 ‘칭경예식’을 치를 계획이었다. 그러나 그해 9월 20일 무렵에 발생한 갑작스런 전염병의 유행으로 인해 ‘칭경예식’과 ‘진연’을 모두 연기할 수밖에 없게 되었다.
‘칭경예식’은 다음해 봄과 가을로 두 차례 연기되었다가 그해 가을에 유야무야되었고, ‘진연’은 다음해 봄으로 연기되는 등의 수차례에 걸친 날짜변경을 거쳐 결국 1902년 12월 3일부터 8일 사이에 치러졌다.

영어초록

‘Hŭidae,’ The term -Hŭidae- a common noun in Chinese, literally means a stage; at its initial period, the name of Hŭidae was more widely used than a proper noun 'Soch'undae' 笑春臺. 戱臺 literally means a stage, was the first royal theater in Korea where Hyŏmnyulsa 協律社 and Wŏn'gaksa 圓覺社 were located. Ch'oe Nam-sŏn 崔南善 named it ‘the first national theater’ in Korea, and he also stated that the background for its foundation lied in ‘Ch'ingkyŏng yesik’ 稱慶禮式 (literally means congratulatory rites) in honor of the fortieth anniversary of King Kojong's 高宗 accession to the throne in 1902.
By the way, Kojong imin Chinyŏn ŭigwe ꡔ高宗壬寅進宴儀軌ꡕ (Document of Court Banquet in 1902 of Kojong) recorded the fact that chinyŏn 進宴 (lit. ‘offering banquet’) had been held to congratulate on King Kojong's fortieth enthronement and his expecting to be a sexagenarian called mangyuksun 望六旬 (51 years of age) since December 3rd, 1902.
On the basis of this, Sa Chin-sil 史眞實, judging the aggressive chinyŏn, a sort of congratulatory rites to be held on December, 1902, regards this Ch'ingkyŏng yesik as a type of a ceremony belonged to chinyŏn.
Actually, the opinion viewing Ch'ingkyŏng yesik as a one-time ceremony has already been perceived in other monographs. In other words, those who hold such an opinion argue that Hŭidae was installed for the use of a ceremony hall for holding Ch'ingkyŏng yesik, while Sa Chin-sil even stated her view that those involved in Hyŏmnyulsa might have kept their business use of it as a theatric space in mind after ‘congratulatory rite’ ended.
The proper understanding of Ch'ingkyŏng yesik is really important to its related study because the foundation purpose of Hŭidae and Hyŏmnyulsa could appear differently according to the character and contents of congratulatory rite.
This research, with the aim to properly understand the historical background for the foundation of Hŭidae, the first royal theater in our country, deeply considered the promotive process of Ch'ingkyŏng yesik and chinyŏn in 1902 centering on an authentic record for the King Kojong period and Sŭngjŏngwŏn ilgi ꡔ承政院日記ꡕ (Diary of the Royal Secretariat).
As a result, congratulatory rite (Ch'ingkyŏng yesik) was a diplomatic state occasion that was supposed to be held as a commemorative event on the westernized way of protocol accompanied by a military parade ceremony, commemorative medal awarding ceremony, and garden party, etc., according to King Kojong's political intention of displaying Taehan Empire's 大韓帝國 modernized appearance and its national prestige and image to western countries.
On the other hand, court banquet (chinyŏn) was an in-state royal family-centered occasion arranged for both auspicious events, i.e. King Kojong's expecting to be sexagenarian and the fortieth anniversary of King Kojong's enthronement, as congratulatory banquets after traditional manner.
Initially, the in-state court banquet known as nae chinyŏn 內進宴 had been intended to be held starting on October 4th, 1902 [lunar calendar September 3] and to go on with ‘congratulatory rites,’ but both Ch'ingkyŏng yesik and chinyŏn were impossible to be carried out as scheduled due to an abrupt prevalence of disease outbreak around September 20th of that year.
Ch'ingkyŏng yesik was delayed until the spring and the autumn of the next year, then being dropped, while the chinyŏn was finally carried out between the 8th and 3rd of December, 1902 after going through several date changes including a delay to the spring of the next year.
