넷플릭스 오리지널 다큐멘터리 연구 (Study on the Netflix’s Original Documentaries)

초록

본 연구는 넷플릭스 오리지널 다큐멘터리가 어떤 경향성을 지니고 있는지 그 전체적인 현황을 살펴보기 위한 것이다. 이를 위해 넷플릭스 오리지널 다큐멘터리가 재현하는 현실은 무엇인가, 그 현실은 누구의 현실인가, 스토리텔링은 어떤 특징을 갖는가라는 연구문제를 설정하였다. 분석을 위해 543편의 넷플릭스 오리지널 다큐멘터리를 선정하여 내용분석을 실시하였으며, 스토리텔링 양식을 살펴보기 위해 전 세계적으로 인기도가 높은 10편의 다큐멘터리를 선별하여 서사분석을 하였다. 분석 결과2013년 이후 오리지널 다큐멘터리가 지속적으로 증가하는 경향이었으며, 특히 2019년 이후 편수의 증가가 두드러진 것으로 나타났다. 내용에 있어서는 ‘범죄’를 소재로 한 다큐멘터리가 가장 많았고, ‘인물’과 ‘인생/ 삶’, ‘시사/사회문제’에 대한 다큐멘터리가 그 뒤를 이었다. 지역별로는미국의 현실을 다룬 다큐멘터리가 가장 많았으며, 미국과 문화적, 지리적으로 근접한 국가의 현실이 많이 재현된 것으로 나타났다. 스토리텔링차원에서는 오리지널 다큐멘터리가 흥미로운 소재, 복잡하지 않은 이야기 구조, 이를 더 이해하기 쉽고 흥미롭게 해주는 재연과 애니메이션 기법, 그 외 다양한 볼거리를 통해 영화나 드라마와는 또 다른 재미를 제공하고 있었다. 넷플릭스의 오리지널 다큐멘터리는 가능한 많은 가입자를 끌어들이고 유지할 수 있는 상품으로서의 가치가 더 많이 부여된 것으로 보인다.

영어초록

This study’s goal is examining overall tendencies of current Netflix’s original documentaries. To this goal, three research questions were set: what is the reality that Netflix original documentaries reproduce, whose reality is that reality, and what characteristics storytelling has. For the analysis, 543 Netflix’s original documentaries were selected and content analysis was conducted, and 10 most globally popular documentaries were sorted, and narrative analysis was conducted. According to the analysis, number of original documentaries has been increasing since 2013, and it sharply increased after 2019. In terms of content, documentaries on ‘crimes’ are most common and themes on ‘people/life’, ‘current affairs/social problems’ follow.
Regionally, documentaries focus on reality of the USA and the rest also represented reality of countries which are culturally and geographically close to the USA. As for the storytelling, they offer amusement differs from that of movies and dramas by providing interesting themes, legible narrative structure, representation and animation techniques that makes documentaries more comprehensible and amusing. Netflix's original documentaries appear to be more valued as a product that can attract and retain as many subscribers as possible.
