‘마을가꾸기 사업’과 부산 안동네 마을의 변화 (Wall Painting Project and Its Impact on Andongne in Pusan)

초록

부산의 안동네는 공동묘지 위에 세워진 빈곤한 산동네이다. 경제적으로는 벼랑 끝에 몰린 주민 대부분은 싼값에 시내 가까이에서 살 수 있는 장점 때문에 이곳에 정착했다. 이들의 삶은 가난 때문에 척박하였지만, 마을 주민은 다양한 어려움을 공동으로 겪으면서 끈끈한 유대감도 어느 정도 가지고 있었다. 이 마을은 외지인이 거의 방문하지 않는 ‘비가시적(invisible)’ 공간이었는데, 2008년에 시작된 벽화그리기 사업은 이들의 삶을 많이 변화시켰다. 많은 대학생이 마을의 미화를 위해 헌신적으로 노력하는 모습에서 주민은 정신적 유대감을 느꼈을 뿐만 아니라 자신들의 자존감도 어느 정도 되찾게 되었다. 마을에 그려진 벽화가 2008년 ‘대한민국 공공디자인대상’을 수상하자, 많은 관광객과 공무원이 마을의 벽화를 보기 위해 방문하였다. 안동네는 이를 통해 ‘비가시적’ 공간에서 ‘가시적(visible)’ 장소로 거듭나게 되었으며, 다양한 외지인들과의 유대와 연대도 새롭게 만들어졌다.
다양한 형태의 행정적, 물리적 압력이 안동네 주민의 삶을 피폐하게 만들었지만, 벽화를 매개로 한 외지인과의 사회적 연대는 이들의 자존감을 어느 정도 회복해주었을 뿐만 아니라, 이들의 삶이 정상화되는 데 이바지했다.

영어초록

Andongne in Busan is a poor mountain town built on a public cemetery. Being in an economically extreme condition, most of residents have settled in this area because they can live close to the downtown with low cost. Even though their lives are rough due to poverty, they have some form of bonding together as they have shared many difficulties. This town was a invisible space where outsiders have seldom visited. Since the wall painting project started in 2008, however, their lives have considerably changed. Having watched many college students devote their time and efforts to the cleaning of the town, the residents not only felt psychological bonding, but also recovered some of their self-esteem. As the wall paintings in the town won the grand prize of the Korea Public Design Award, many tourists and public employees visited the town to see the wall paintings. Andongne was reborn as a visible place from invisible space, and various forms of bonding and connections with outsiders were newly established.
Even though diverse forms of administrative and physical pressures made the residents' life miserable, the social connection with the outsiders with the help of wall paintings not only recovered their self-esteem, but also contributed to the normalization of their lives.
