남북 통합 국어학사 서술의 필요성과 과제 ─ 일제강점기 ‘조선어학’의 학문적 계보와 국어학사 서술의 단절을 넘어 ─ (The Necessity of the Description on Unified Korean Language Research and its Problems)

초록

이 글은 일제강점기 및 해방 초기의 국어학 관련 연구자 중심의 분석을 바탕으로 남과 북에서 서술된 국어학사 내용을 검토하고 국어학 학문 영역의 통합의 일환으로 통합 국어학사 서술의 필요성과 그 과제에 대하여 살펴본 논문이다.
우리의 국어학은 일제 강점기를 지나 해방이 된 후 1948년 남북이 분단되면서 국어학의 지향은 ‘(한)국어학’과 ‘조선어학’이라는 두 양상으로 균열과 분단의 길을 걷게 되었다. 해방 이후 그러한 균열과 분단은 서로의 업적과 내용을 덮거나 배제하는 반쪽의 ‘어학사’였다고 할 수 있다. 그런 의미에서 통합 국어학사 서술이의 당위성이 제기된다.
우선 이 논문에서는 일제강점기 초기 조선 ‘국어학’의 현황 및 분화를 언급고 공시적인 조선어 문법을 주로 천착한 ‘조선인’ 연구자 그룹과 역사적 측면에서 ‘조선어’를 연구한 일본인 그룹으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 또한 조선 ‘국어학’ 연구자의 학력을 세 그룹으로 분류하고 각각 어떤 경향성을 보이고 있는지에 대하여 논의하였다. 한편 일제강점기와 해방 직후 ‘국어학사’ 연구 성과가 조선 ‘국어학’ 연구자의 학력과 정치적 선택에 따라서 어떻게 반영되었는지를 제시해 보고자 하였다.
또한 다른 한편으로 남북 근현대 국어학사 기점 인식의 차이가 존재함을 확인하였고, 남북 국어학사 서술에서 드러난 시대 구분과 쟁점, 남북 통합 국어학사 서술에서 우선적으로 극복해야 할 몇 문제를 개괄적으로 다루었으며, 남북 근현대 통합국어학사 서술의 당위성과 필요성 문제를 실증적 서술에 더 초점을 맞춰 진행되어야 함을 추가로 언급하였다.
결국 이 논문에서는 남북 통합 국어학사를 지향한다는 목적에 맞게 선험적이거나 선언적 필요성을 제기하는 것이 아니라 미래지향적으로 남북이 함께 이 논의에서 수용할 수 있는 서술 내용을 구체화하고자 하는 의도가 전제되었고 그것이 이 논문이 지향하고 있는 점이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This article examines diverse research conducted on the Korean language in South and North Korea between the early 20th century (the onset of the Japanese colonialism of the Korean peninsula) and the late 1940s. It points out the necessity of unified Korean language research between the two countries, and discusses the issues that may be raised in regard to producing a unified examination of the Korean language.
With this background information, we first demonstrate the research on the Korean language in the early 20th century. We then categorize the researchers into two groups based on their ethnicity and their focus in research. We also categorize the researchers during this period into three groups based on their educational background and identify their research methods and preferences accordingly. For instance, we note that there is a discrepancy between the scholars of the two countries in identifying the periods of early modern and modern Korean. We point out that the priority should be given to this type of issue, due to its relatively empirically justifiable nature. We believe that our claim is a desirable consideration, particularly because our focus is not on issues that can be interpreted differently based on different political viewpoints
