초록

본 연구는 1975년 4월~5월 베트남 공산화 시점에서 베트남으로부터 철수에 실패해억류됐던 주월한국대사관 공관원 및 교민들이 한국으로 송환하지 못하고 억류되는 상황에서 무엇을 느끼고 어떤 감정을 구술자료를 통해 이야기하고 있는지 이들의 체험을 중심으로 재구성하고자 한다. 선행 연구가 억류 이후 송환을 위한 정부의 협상에 초점을 맞추었다면, 이번 연구는 구술자료에 기반해서 냉전, 베트남 전쟁 참전-제2전선론이라는정부의 공식적 독트린 이면에 존재했던 억류자들의 ‘생존’을 둘러싼 체험과 기억을 다뤄보고자 한다. 억류와 탈출을 둘러싼 이들의 현재적 기억은 트라우마, 미래에 대한 좌절과실패, 망각하고 싶은 악몽, 물질적 보상보다는 정신적 고통을 인정해 주지 않는 한국 정부/외교부에 대한 섭섭함 등 다양한 형태로 나타났다. 사이공에서 1년여에 걸친 억류의체험이 아직도 기억으로 남아있는 것은 기억의 현재적 힘인 동시에, ‘적과 아’ ‘죽음과 생존’ 이라는 휴전체제를 전후로 만들어진 냉전의 윤리학이 이들의 언어와 신체에 지금도각인되어 있는 증좌(證左)일지도 모른다. 이런 면에서 베트남전쟁은 ‘전쟁’이나 ‘외화획득’ 으로 단순화되기 어렵다. 이들의 억류의 기억은 한반도내 ‘전장국가’(戰場國家)가 베트남사이공에서 ‘재림’(再臨)된 것이었지도 모른다.

영어초록

This paper reconstructs the memory of detained diplomats from 1975 to 1976 in Saigon. After the collapse of the Republic of South Vietnam, diplomats of South Korea were detained in Saigon. This paper focuses on the experience and memory of detainees by interpreting oral documents.
Preceding studies tend to focus on the negotiation of inter-government relationships for repatriation of Korean detainees. In contrast, this paper focuses on the experience and memory of Korean detainees. In this way this paper seeks to reveal the hidden-transcript under the dominant-narrative concerning participation in the Vietnam War. The present memory concerning detainment and exit are represented in trauma, frustration & failure of life, nightmare and regret of government. The experience of detainment in Saigon has continued to affect the lives of the detainees into the present. The reasons for this are not only due to the power of memory but also ‘ethics of cold war’ including ‘enemy vs ours’ and ‘death vs survival,’ which are embedded in their language and bodies. In this context, participation in the Vietnam War cannot be simply understood as only a ‘holy war for anti-communism’ or ‘acquisition of foreign currencies.’ Rather, the memories of detainment may present a ‘reincarnation of battlefield-state’ in Saigon of 1975.
