공(公)과 사(私)에 대한 주희(朱熹)의 인식과 공공성 교육 (Zhu Xi’s Understanding of Gong(公) and Si(私): Its Meaning for Publicness Education)

초록

이 논문은 공(公)과 사(私)에 대한 주희의 인식을 배경으로 현대 공공성 교육의 문제를 숙고해 보는데 목적이 있다. 공공성은 ‘공익성’, ‘공동체성’, ‘공개성’과 같이 일반적으로 거론된 의미 외에, ‘자유’, ‘복수성’, ‘평등’, ‘정의’, ‘소통’, ‘배려’, ‘사랑’, ‘연대’ 와 같은 가치를 그 자체 의미 맥락 속에 내장하고 있다. 공공성 교육은 이와 같은 공공성과 연계된 의식, 즉 공적 의식을 학습주체들이 내면으로부터 끌어내고 발현해가도록 이끄는 일을 의미한다. 한편 주희의 공사관의 요체는 개인적, 사회적 차원에서 사람들의 마음의 공화(公化)의 의의를 드러내는 것인데, 이는 곧바로 공공성 교육의 요청과 직결된다. 주희의 공/사의 이원 대립 관념, 나아가 공에서 인(仁)으로 그리고 의(義)와 예(禮)로 이어지는 공적 의식의 구현 방식에 대한 주희의 이해를 통해, 학습주체의 내면이 에고적 차원을 넘어서 우주적 혹은 존재적 차원의 의식 지평으로 확장되어 사랑과 정의, 배려, 연대, 소통의 공적 가치를 발견하고 실현해 가는 교육의 모습을 구상해 볼 수 있다. 공공성 교육은 개체성 교육과의 관계 설정도 그 중요한 문제로 안고 있는데, 주희는 온전한 의미의 개체성 실현은 반드시 공공성 실현과 연계되어 가능하다는 이해를 지니고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 주희는 공공성과는 달리 개체성의 실현 문제에 대해서 충분히 숙고하지 못했다. 주희 공부방법의 핵인 경(敬)은 교육의 장에서 학습주체의 공적 의식과 개체성을 동시에 실현해 가는 기제로 재해석될 잠재력을 지닌다. 그런데 공공성과 개체성의 조화로운 발현이 가능한 공공성 교육론을 위해, 서양 근현대의 주요 교육철학적 사유와 주자학적 사유 사이의 적극적인 대화도 모색될 필요가 있다.

영어초록

This article demonstrates Zhu Xi’s educational understanding of the concepts of gong(universal heart-mind) and Si(egoistic desire), with an interest to show the vision of publicness education. Publicness education means the task to cultivate the learner’s public and universal heart-mind that contains the values of freedom, plurality, equality, love, justice, consideration, solidarity, and interaction. Through the Zhi Xi’s understanding of the meanings of gong and its realizing process, we can design the educational model to open the learner’s heart-mind of universal dimension beyond egoistic dimension. However, Zhu Xi doesn’t consider enough the issue of the realization of learner’s individuality in his educational discourses to cultivate of publicness, although he believes that the whole realization of learner’s individuality is possible only on the basis of the realization of learner’s universal heart-mind. For the publicness education to develop harmoniously the learner’s universality and individuality, it is needed to interpretate newly the general learning or education model suggested by Zhu Xi, including of the issue of jing as the core learning method. Further, some productive communications between Zhu Xi's thought and Western modern educational thoughts that have created the ideas to cultivate the human individuality are needed.
