전쟁그림책 이미지의 시각문법 분석 - ‘에리카 이야기’와 ‘곰이와 오푼돌이 아저씨’를 중심으로 - (Reading war picture books with the grammar of visual design in social semiotics)

초록

2000년대 이후 전쟁과 같은 무거운 사회적 주제를 다루는 그림책들이 증가하고 있다. 이는 어린 독자들에게전쟁이라는 현실의 문제를 외면하기보다 다양한 방식으로 알려주고 문제의식을 가지게 해야 한다는 논의가 활발해짐을 의미한다. 본 연구에서는 전쟁그림책 이미지의 시각 문법을 사회기호학의 맥락에서 분석하였다. 문자언어와 마찬가지로 이미지 언어에도 의미 전달을 위한 질서가 존재하며 이를 시각디자인 문법으로 독해하여 어떻게 독자와 상호 소통하는지 살펴보는 것이다. 이에 대한 이론적 논의를 2장에서 정리하고 그림책 ‘에리카 이야기’와 ‘곰이와 오푼돌이 아저씨’의 주요 이미지를 시각문법의 메타 기능을 중심으로 분석하였다. 두 그림책의분석 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 재현적 기능에서 행위자들은 주로 상호교류의 일방향적인 방향성으로 재현되어나타났다. 둘째, 상호작용적 기능에서도 두 이야기 모두 ‘제공’의 이미지로 나타난다. 독자와 행위자들의 사회적거리를 먼 거리로 유지하되 사건의 전개나 양상을 알리는 주요 장면에서만 근거리를 교차하여 참여하기를 강조하는 양상으로 나타났다. 셋째, 이미지 구성적 기능으로 두 이야기 모두 가장 현저성을 띄는 요소는 색채와 시간성으로 나타났다. 색채를 사용하여 시공간을 넘나들고 과거의 상흔이 현실과 미래에 공존하며 영향을 끼치는것을 강조하였다. 이러한 그림문법의 독해를 통해 동서양 실제적 배경의 그림책에서 전쟁이 가진 특성이 다양한시각적 장치에 의해서 의도적으로 작용하고 독자와 상호작용함을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

Since the 2000s, there has been an increasing number of realistic picture books that deal withsocial issues such as war. It means that they inform in various ways and expand theconsciousness of a problem rather than ignoring the reality and problems of war. This studyaims to analyze, in the context of social semiotics, how the image in war picture bookscommunicates with a system of visual grammar. Like language, image has the order tocommunicate meaning and it is analyzed by visual design grammar. The theoretical discussion onthis is summarized in Chapter 2. The main image is analyzed mainly with the meta function ofvisual grammar with the case of picture books 'Erica’s Story' and 'Gommi and Uncle Opoondori'.
The results are as follows. First, in a representational function, actors are mainly reproduced inan one-way direction of mutual exchange. Second, interactional features also appear as theimage of 'offer'. The social distance of readers and actors is maintained at a distance, but theinvolvement is emphasized by crossing a short distance only in main scenes that notify thedevelopment or aspect of an event. Third, the most remarkable elements as the compositionalfunction of image in both stories are color and time. Colors are used to transcend space andtime and emphasize that the past scars coexist in reality and future and are influential. Throughthe reading of these picture grammar, it can be seen that the characteristics of war in thepicture book with the realistic backgrounds of the east and the west intentionally act by variousvisual devices and interact with the reader.
