변주곡에 대한 슈만의 새로운 시도: <즉흥곡> Op. 5를 중심으로 (R. Schumann’s New Approach to Variations: Impromptus Op. 5)

초록

슈만(R. Schumann)의 변주곡은 다른 장르에 비해 상대적으로 덜 주목을 받은 장르이다. 그러나, 슈만은 그의작품활동 초기(1828-1835)에 변주곡을 새로운 차원의 장르로 발전시키고자 다양한 시도를 한다. 특히, 그에게문학적 영감을 준 ‘파피용’ 철학과 더불어 음악적 영감을 준 바흐와 베토벤의 영향을 변주곡에 풀어낸 것으로 판단된다. 이에 본 연구는 슈만의 문학적 그리고 음악적 영감이 변주곡 형식의 변형에 어떻게 영향을 미쳤는지 알아보고, 그 핵심 내용을 담고 있는 <즉흥곡> Op. 5의 의미와 가치를 밝혀내는 것에 목적이 있다. 연구를 위해슈만 초기 변주곡인 <아베크 변주곡> Op. 1, <즉흥곡> Op. 5, <카니발> Op. 9, <교향적 연습곡> Op. 13의 특징들을 살펴보며 새로운 변주곡의 형성과 변형과정을 추적하고 이들의 공통분모를 탐색했다. 그 결과, 슈만이 향하고자 했던 방향은 변주곡의 ‘총체성’이었으며 성격소품과 변주곡의 융합인 ‘성격적 변주곡’이라는 독특한 장르를통해 그 이상을 구현하고자 했고 그 여정의 중심에 <즉흥곡>이 있음을 확인했다. 본 연구가 슈만의 새로운 변주곡 기법의 이해를 돕고 <즉흥곡>의 가치를 알리는 데 일조하기를 기대한다.

영어초록

R. Schumann’s variations have received relatively little attention compared to other genres. However, in his early period (1828-35), Schumann frequently worked with variation form, gradually elevating it to a new level of sophistication. In particular, it is believed that he incorporated his literary inspirations, the Papillons idea, and his musical inspirations, Bach and Beethoven, into his variations. The purpose of this study is to investigate how Schumann’s literary and musical inspirations influenced his novel variation and to reveal the meaning and value of the <Impromptus> Op. 5, which contains its core contents. For the study, I examined the characteristics of Schumann’s early variations, <Abegg Variations> Op. 1, <Impromptus> Op. 5, <Carnaval> Op. 9, and <Symphonic Etudes> Op. 13, to trace the formation and transformation of the new variation and to explore their common denominators. As a result, I found that Schumann’s direction was the “totality” of variations, and that he sought to realize this ideal through a unique genre called the “characteristic variation,” a fusion of the character piece and the variation, and that <Impromptus> was at the center of this journey. I hope that this study will contribute to the understanding of Schumann’s new variation technique and promote the value of <Impromptus>.
