초록

This article, on the basis of a constructivist approach, aims to investigate the reasons for and the conditions under which russkii nationalism has come into existence, its main characteristics and its sociopolitical consequence or significance in contemporary Russia. We could define russkii nationalism as the ideology, the sociopolitical movement and mass sentiment that strives for statehood which russkii people constitutes or in which a leading role is given to russkii people. In the making and emergence of this russkii nationalism after the collapse of the Soviet Union an important role have played various historical factors, such as an ideological vacuum, the crisis of identity, the deterioration of the socioeconomic situation and the aggravation of the ethno-political circumstances in Russia. And marked characteristics of russkii nationalism in contemporary Russia include its statistic and ethnocentric tendencies in the ideological and political aspects, the feeling of loss or compensatory motives in the psychological dimension, each of which has its own premodern roots and modern conditions. As for social and political meaning of russkii nationalism in contemporary Russia, we could notice that it takes somewhat different form and substance in Russian society in the 2000s from those of the 1990s. In analyzing contemporary russkii nationalism we could find that such complex factors and causes as historical heritage, contemporary conditions and human consciousness determine the construction, configuration and transfiguration of russkii nationalism. As a result, russkii nationalism, like other nationalisms, has various meanings and diverse faces. And it seems that, most of all, russkii people's thoughts and feelings and understandings of reality and ‘the other’ would play a pivotal role in shaping the construction and development of russkii nationalism in the future.
