젠더, 공간 그리고 공간의 정치화: 시론 차원의 스케치 (Gender, Space, and Politicization of Space: A Theoretical Sketch)

초록

우리의 일상은 집, 거리, 일터, 공원, 광장 및 시장과 같은 다양한 공간에서 이루어진다. 우리는 공간이 없이는 살아갈 수 없으며 매일매일 접하는 일상의 공간에 우리의 삶이 담겨져 있다. 이처럼 인간 삶의 공간성으로 시선을 돌려 공간의 프레임으로 한국사회를 보면, 우리는 공간이 사회적 강자인 남성의 관점에서 배치되고 작동되고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 공적 공간에서 활동할 것으로 간주되는 남성의 이해관계를 중심으로 우리의 일상이 전개되는 공간이 구성됨으로써, 사적 공간에서 돌봄 노동을 수행할 것으로 간주되는 여성의 경우에는 공간에 대한 권리가 심각하게 제약을 받고 있다. 그러나 모든 권력이 국민으로부터 나오는 민주주의 사회에서 권력의 소재지로서의 국민은 남성이냐 여성이냐에 상관없이 스스로가 통치자이자 피치자로서 자신의 구체적인 삶이 펼쳐지는 공간에 대해서도 주권자로서의 권력을 행사할 수 있어야 한다. 이런 문제의식 하에서, 이 글은 먼저 2장에서 공간이 갖는 사회적 성격에 주목, 젠더의 렌즈로 공간을 분석할 때는 사회관계의 능동적 구성체로서의 공간에 무게중심을 설정한 필요가 있음을 강조한다. 이어지는 3장에서는 전통적 공간 연구가 갖고 있는 남성중심주의의 한계에 대해 연구주체와 연구의제라는 두 가지 차원으로 나누어 비판적으로 살펴본다. 나아가 4장에서는 ‘현대적 신분’으로 정의되는 젠더에 따라 공간이 어떻게 분리되어 있는가로 시선을 돌리는 가운데, 공간과 사적 공간으로의 분리 및 도시의 공적 공간이 산출하는 젠더적 효과를 분석한다. 마지막으로 결론에 해당하는 5장에서는 공간의 정치화를 출발점으로 하여 젠더평등에 기초한 공간의 생산 및 공간주권의 구현을 위한 대안을 간략히 스케치한다.

영어초록

Our everyday life takes place in various spaces such as home, street, workplace, park, square, market, and so on. We can’t live without space and our life happens in spaces which we roam every day. When we turn our eyes to spaciality of human beings’ life and look at Korean society through the lens of space, we can recognize that space is arranged by men who are socially strong. Space is mainly constructed to serve to the interests of men who are expected to be active in public space. For this reason the right to space of women who primarily perform care work in private space is strongly limited. But in a democratic society, where all power is to be wielded by the people, people as the sovereign could use their power in order to design space without any limitation of gender.
This study further treats this issue in chapter 2 by emphasizing the social character of space and the meaning of space as active formulation of social relations. Chapter 3 concentrates on limits of androcentrism which traditional space studies have shown and criticizes these limits in the two respects of how they are set by researchers and their research agenda. Chapter 4 focuses on the question how space is divided by gender and analyzes gender effects which are produced by the spacial division of urban space in public and private space. Lastly, this study emphasizes the necessity of the politicization of space and sketches alternatives for the production of space and the embodiment of space sovereignty which is based on gender equality.
