두 문화, 사회생물학, 그리고 통섭: 비판적 고찰 (Two Cultures, Sociobiology, and Consilience: A Critical Appraisal)

초록

현대사회에서 과학기술과 인문사회 사이의 상호작용은 날로 커져 가고 있다. 과학기술이 현대사회에 미치는 영향이 날로 커져가고 있을 뿐만 아니라, 과학기술의 발전 역시 진공 속에서 이루어지는 것이 아니라 사회적 맥락에 크게 의존한다는 사실이 밝혀지기 시작하면서 과학기술과 인문사회 사이를 유기적으로 연계해야 한다는 목소리들이 최근 높아지고 있다.
이러한 문제의식에 입각하여 널리 회자되고 있는 개념이 바로“두 문화”(two cultures)이다. 1959년 스노우 경(Sir C.P.Snow)이 말한두 문화 문제는 과학 문화와 인문 문화 사이의 심각한 괴리 현상을 지적한 것으로써, 이후 이 두 문화 개념은 과학기술과 인문사회 사이의 갈등과 격차를 의미하는 핵심어로 통용되고 있다. 조금다른 맥락이기는 하지만 1975년에 하버드대의 생물학자인 에드워드 윌슨(Edward Wilson)은 스노우 경과 비슷하게 두 문화에 대한 문제의식을 가지고 자신이 새로이 주창한 사회생물학을 통해 두 문화의 통합을 전망하였다. 윌슨은 이를 더욱 발전시켜 1998년도에 “컨실리언스”(consilience)라는 개념으로 두 문화의 통합에 대한 자신의 생각을 더욱 체계화하였다.
필자는 이 글에서 스노우 경의 두 문화 개념, 사회생물학에 투영된 두 문화 문제, 그리고 윌슨의 통섭 개념들에 대한 비판적 고찰을 통해 이들이 과학기술과 인문사회를 진정으로 통합하는 데한계가 많음을 주장하고자 한다. 그럼에도 불구하고 두 문화의 극복 문제는 매우 중요하고 시급한 과제이므로 필자는 이 글의 결론 부분에서, 두 문화 문제의 극복을 위한 하나의 대안으로서 연방주의적 과학기술학이라는 개념의 유용성을 제안하고 있다.

영어초록

The interaction between techno-science and humanities has increased more than ever. The increased interaction between the two has become the base of the argument that we should try to bridge the two areas in order to fully understand and cope with modern society, and this has been particularly persuasive among the intellectuals. Historically Sir C.
P.Snow invented the term “two cultures” in the late 1950s in order to show that there were considerable gap between the science culture and the humanities culture. In the mid 1970s, Harvard biology professor Edward Wilson tried to solve what has been dubbed the two cultures problem by developing sociobiology. In the late 1990s, he once again argued ambitiously that the great unity of all knowledge could be achieved through “consilience”, the term borrowed from a historian of science, by which he means that humanities and social sciences can be absorbed into biology.
This paper critically appraises whether those who tried to raise questions and provide solutions with regard to the two cultures problem have been successful. Based upon the negative appraisal, this paper finally suggests that a federalist Science and Technology Studies(STS)approach can serve as an alternative to the reductionist and imperialist approaches proposed by Snow and Wilson.
