기후변화, 흑사병 그리고 대전환 (Climate Change, the Black Death, and the Great Transition)

초록

이 논문은 13세기에 시작된 전지구적 차원의 기후변화가 유럽의 사회경제적 위기, 흑사병, 그리고 결국 대전환으로 귀결된 과정을 살펴본다. 논문의 초점은 세 가지 질문으로 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 기후변화가 어떻게 페스트균의 발병 및 유행으로 이어지게 되었는가? 둘째, 기후 변화로 인해 발생한 유럽 사회의 사회적 경제적 위기와 인위적인 역사행위들이 어떻게 재난을 확대시켰는가? 셋째, 기후변화, 생태환경의 전환, 그리고 인간사회의 대응이 왜 시너지 효과를 내게 되었는가? 이 논문은 이러한 질문들에 답하며, 기후변화가 14세기의 대기근, 농업경제 체제의 위기, 흑사병의 발병, 그리고 나아가 대전환에 이르게 한 결정적인 원인이었음을 규명한다. 흑사병이 대전환을 촉발한 것은 그 시기에 기후환경과 생태계는 물론 유럽의 정치, 경제, 사회 조건들이 맞물려 역사상 좀처럼 보기 어려운 방식으로 시너지 작용을 일으켰기 때문이다. 기후변화가 위기 및 변화의 근본적인 원인이자 추진력이었을지라도 이 자연현상이 일방향으로만 작동한 것은 아니었다. 무분별한 개간과 과도한 도시건설, 빈번한 전쟁, 세계적 규모의 네트워크 형성 등 인간들이 만들어낸 여러 요인들도 흑사병과 대전환을 초래한 원인이었다. 환경과 인간의 상호작용을 통해 성장하고 확산된 이 감염병이 취약해진 유럽의 사회-생태 시스템을 전복시킨 것이다.

영어초록

This paper examines the process in which global climate change, that began in the 13th century, led to social and economic crises, the Black Death, and eventually the Great Transition in Europe. The focus of the paper can be summarized into three questions. First, how did climate change lead to the outbreak and prevalence of the plague? Second, how did social and economic crises and artificial historical actions in European society caused by the climate change expand the disaster? Third, why did climate change, the transformation of the ecological environment, and the response of human society create synergy effects? In answering these questions, this paper clarifies that climate change was the decisive cause of the 14th century’s famine, the crisis of the agricultural economy system, the outbreak of the Black Death, and even the Great Transition. The Black Death triggered the Great Transition because the combination of climate environment and ecosystems as well as European political, economic, and social conditions created synergy in a way that was rarely seen in history. Although climate change was the fundamental cause and driving force of the crisis and change, this natural phenomenon did not work only in one direction. Various factors created by humans, such as indiscriminate reclamation, excessive urban construction, frequent wars, and the formation of a global network, were also causes of the Black Death and the Great Transformation. This infectious disease, which grew and spread through environmental and human interactions, overturned the vulnerable European socio-ecological system.
