초록

이 글은 할리우드 감독 조셉 폰 스턴버그의 경성 방문(1936)을 재구하고 1930년대 중반 조선영화계의 상황을 둘러싼 다층적인 맥락에서 그에 대한 조선영화계의 환대가 갖는 의미를 분석하고자 했다.
스턴버그의 방문을 환대했던 주체들은 기존의 조선영화계를 비판하며, 조선인 자본으로 구축되는 합리적인 제작 시스템을 열망했고, 스턴버그와의 교류를 과시함으로써 스스로를 토키 이후 조선영화계를 이끌어갈 새로운 주체로 정립하려 했다. 영화 기업화를 실현하는 새로운 영화회사(조선영화주식회사)의 설립과도 관련되어 있었던 스턴버그의 방문은, 조선영화계 내부의 반목과 갈등이 드러나는 사건이기도 했다.
조선영화계와 스턴버그와의 만남은 토키 이후 조선영화가 제국을 넘어 세계와 자기 사이의 관계를 상상하는 계기였다. ‘조선인이 보는 영화’에서 ‘조선을 보여주는 영화’로 조선영화의 위치가 전환되는 과정 속에서, 조선영화계는 스턴버그라는 우연한 방문자를 ‘조선영화의 고유성’을 발견하는 ‘타자의 시선’으로 삼고, ‘제2단계의 조선영화’로의 도약을 향한 욕망을 표출했다. 그러나 스턴버그와 조선영화계의 만남에 내재된 불균형은 식민지 영화의 한계를 확인시키는 것이기도 했다.

영어초록

This article attempted to reconstitute the events around Josef von Sternberg’s visit in Seoul(1936) and analysis the way how Korean film-makers’ hospitality to him had the complex meaning in the context of colonial Korean cinema.
It was the members of the organizing office of Chosun Film Corporation that acted as the host to Sternberg’s visit in Seoul. They had aspirations to have reasonable production system supported by financial strength and leaded the discourse on the rationalization of film industry, criticizing the establishing film industry. They appropriated their extraordinary encounter with a world-famous film director Sternberg to build themselves as the subject leading the new step of Korean cinema since the talkie. The event of Sternberg’s visit could expose the feud and conflicts within the colonial Korean cinema.
Sternberg’s visit might be a good chance that the colonial Korean cinema imagined the relation to the world beyond empire Japan. His visit was on the turning position from the Chosun cinema that the colonial Korean people watched to the Chosun Cinema that represented the Koreanness. Through this special visiter Sternberg from Hollywood, colonial Korean cinema faced the Others’ eyes to recognize the local color as the Koreanness and expressed their desire to make a leap forward to the new step of Korean cinema. However, the imbalance of their encounter also confirmed the limits of colonial cinema.
