근대기 불교계와 佛畵의 제작 (Korean Buddhism in Modern Era and the Production of Buddhist Paintings)

초록

19세기 중엽 경부터 20세기 전반에 이르는 약 100년 가까운 기간에 제작된 불화는 현전하는 불화의 대부분을 차지한다. 그러나 많은 수량에도 불구하고 근대기 불화들은 이전 시기의 불화들에 비해 도상의 혼란과 기법의 질적 저하라는 측면에서 쇠퇴기의 그림들로 평가절하되는 경향이 지속되어 왔다.
현전하는 근대불화의 수량은 같은 동아시아권의 중국, 일본과 비교가 되지 않을 정도로 압도적이며, 우리나라 불화의 역사를 따져보아도 가장 많은 수이다. 이는 단순히 시기가 멀지 않기 때문에 많은 작품이 남아 있다기보다는 당시 불화를 제작할 수 있는 사회적 여건이 조성되면서 제작 자체가 활발했다는 것으로 보는 것이 적절하다고 사료된다. 즉, 19세기 후반에는 민간 뿐 아니라 왕실에서도 공개적으로 불사를 지원하는 등 각 계층의 후원으로 불사가 확대되어 불화의 제작이 활발하였고, 20세기 전반에도 역시 일제 강점기를 기점으로 본산 사찰을 중심으로 각 사찰의 불화가 적극적으로 제작되었다.
한편 이 시기 제작된 불화들은 개항을 통해 들어온 日本佛敎와 서양을 비롯한 외국의 새로운 문물들이 불화에 수용됨에 따라 도상과 기법에서 전에 없이 다양해지는 경향을 보인다. 특히 도상의 경우 일반회화의 民畵나 道釋人物畵의 모티프들이 불화의 한 구성요소로서 차용되기도 하였고, 中國의 佛敎版畵나 小說揷畵와 같은 民間版畵, 그리고 日本佛敎의 도상 등이 불화에 수용되는 등 변화를 추구하였다.
근대기는 시대적으로 조선 말기, 대한제국기, 일제강점기를 거치는 혼란과 격동의 시기였지만 미술문화에 있어서는 새로운 자극에 의한 다양한 결과물들이 탄생할 수 있었던 시기였다. 근대기의 불화들도 변화하는 시대의 흐름에 따라 도상과 양식에 있어 이전에는 볼 수 없었던 다양한 모색과 시도가 이루어졌음을 알 수 있다. 이처럼 이제는 근대불화의 양적 방대함과 도상과 기법에 있어 그 어느 시기보다 다양화 되었던 측면에 주목할 때가 아닌가 한다.

영어초록

The vast majority of Korean Buddhist paintings surviving today were produced during a period of about one hundred years between the mid-19th century and the early 20th century. Buddhist paintings from this period, although numerous, have been mostly considered qualitatively inferior to those from earlier times, with iconographic eclecticism and technical coarseness being the two flaws pointed most frequently.
The body of modern-era Korean Buddhist paintings far exceeds, in size, that of those that have survived in China or Japan. Their number is equally impressive also when compared to other periods in the history of Korean Buddhist painting. This is not just because this period is closer to our time,allowing more paintings to survive to the present. It would be reasonable to assume that social conditions during this period were also favorable for the production of Buddhist paintings, and there was a higher level of production than during previous periods. As a matter of fact, towards the late 19th century, the social atmosphere was such that support for Buddhist temples and Buddhist art was quite openly provided both by the general population and the royal house, and Buddhist paintings were produced in large numbers, as a result. The level of production of Buddhist paintings was as lively in the early 20th century under the so-called bonsan system, a Buddhist temple network put into place by the Japanese colonial administration.
Buddhist paintings produced during this period display a degree of diversity which was unprecedented, in terms of iconography and techniques, as they incorporated foreign cultural elements brought into the country following the opening of the ports, including elements of Japanese Buddhism and Western elements. In iconography, in particular, motifs from non-religious paintings and Taoist figure paintings were largely borrowed, and the incorporation of elements from woodcuts such as Chinese Buddhist woodcuts or novel illustrations, and Japanese Buddhist iconography allowed for rich variety.
The modern period, corresponding to the period from the later part of Joseon to the Korean Empire and the Japanese occupation, was a time of turbulence and change for Joseon. Social and political upheavals of this period, however, had a positive impact on the diversity of visual arts, acting as new stimuli. Novel iconographic and stylistic attempts were also made in modern-era Buddhist paintings, echoing the mood of the day. Such diversity of modern-era Korean Buddhist paintings, both in terms of iconography and techniques, has been long overlooked. It is, therefore, high time to begin to give recognition to this vast and richly-varied body of Buddhist paintings.
