Shanhaijing is an important document in Chinese mythology. However, myth is a word that was starting to rise on sinology in the late 19th century and already Shanhaijing has existed before the rising of myth on sinology. Then, how could Shanhaijing be classed as Chinese myth? About this question, it could be considered that Shanhaijing had not been written as a myth but it is read as a myth. About the textuality of Shanhaijing, there have been various views in documents from ear of Western Han. Interpretational premise or stance specially have influences on research of Shanhaijing. So, they need to be considered for researching Shanhaijing as a mythological text: one is the textuality of Shanhaijing, and the other is the definition of myth.
Accordingly, at first, categories of Shanhaijing are researched in Chinese traditional scholar categorization and consider about general textuality of Shanhaijing. And then, based on consideration on transition of myth’s definition and adoption, validity of mythology as a theological tool for interpreting Shanhaijing be examined. Based on these researches, this paper tries to access parts of Shanhaijing’s symbolic structure.
