초록

〈佛說大報父母恩重經〉은 孝의 당위성을 내세움으로써 儒家로부터 거부감을 줄이고, 부모에 대한 報恩을 주제로 하여 사대부와 서민들로부터 많은 호응을 얻었던 경전이다. 판본별 偈頌의 異文에서 무오본은 화암사 계통과, 구마라습역본은 합부본 계통과 유사한 양상을 보였으며, 언해본은 한문 원문과 한글 번역이 상응하지 않은 경우가 많았다.
정조대에 용주사에서 간행한 판본은 科判 2판, 變相圖 7판(14圖), 한문 經文 22판, 諺解 49판으로 구성되어 있다. 언해본의 번역은 원문의 의미를 충실히 반영하여 기존 한문ㆍ한글 번역의 불일치 양상이 대폭 교정되었으며, 雙行의 한글 주석으로 불교 어휘를 풀이하여 불자가 아닌 이도 뜻을 이해할 수 있도록 하였다. 경문 전체의 원문 검토에서 기존 판본의 오탈자가 대폭 수정되고 文語에 가까운 투식을 갖추었으며 불분명했던 의미들이 보다 명확해졌음이 드러났다. 용주사본은 科判이 편입되고 經文에 주석이 추가되어 주해서의 성격도 갖추었다. 유교적 관점에서 부처를 높이는 표현이 삭제되었던 용주사본은 전통적 불경 주해 문헌의 ‘科判’이라는 양식을 계승함으로써 불교적 정체성을 존속할 수 있게 된다.
정조가 지은 偈와 이에 갱재한 蔡濟恭ㆍ徐瀅修의 「恩重經偈」를 분석하여 정조가 〈佛說大報父母恩重經〉을 간행하고 용주사에 봉안한 것이 생부 사도세자의 명복 축원과 관련이 있으며, 부모 은혜의 중함을 세상에 알리고 풍속을 교화하는 데 목적이 있음을 살폈다. 또한 문집과 실록의 내용을 근거로 조선 유학자들의 〈부모은중경〉에 대한 긍정적 인식이 효와 보은 사상에서 비롯하였으며, 용주사에 전하는 석판본은 黃運祚라는 인물이 관련되어 있음을 확인하였다.

영어초록

Bulseol-daebo-bumo-eunjung-gyeong(佛說大報父母恩重經) is a scripture that reduced resistance from Confucianism(儒家) by claiming legitimacy of the House of Yi(孝) and was well-received by scholar-officials and commoners for its theme of repaying parents(報恩). Looking through the different Chinese characters(異文) of Gesong(偈頌) by each woodcut print showed that Muo-bon has similarities to the Hwaamasa line, and Gumaraseup-bon(鳩摩羅什本) also has similarities with Hapbu-bon line. In many cases, the original Chinese text and the Korean translation did not correspond to Unhae-bon(諺解本). Woodcut prints published at Yongjusa(龍珠寺) during the reign of King Jeongjo(正祖代), contain 2 pieces of Gwa-pan(科判), 7 pieces of Byeonsang-do(變相圖), 22 pieces of the sutras(經文) in Chinese, and 49 pieces of Unhae(諺解). For the translation of Unhae-bon, the discrepancy between the existing Chinese and Korean translations has been significantly corrected as it faithfully reflects the meaning of the original text. It interprets the Buddhist terms with the two-line(雙行) Korean annotations so that non-Buddhists can understand the meaning. As a result of reviewing the original text of the entire sutra, it was shown that the typos seen in the existing edition have been greatly modified and have a format close to a literary language(文語). The ambiguous meanings also became clearer. Yongjusa-bon also has the characteristics of the commentary(注解書) as Gwa-pan(科判) was included and the annotations were added to the sutra(經文). Yongjusa-bon, in which the expression of honoring the Buddha from a Confucian perspective was deleted, can retain its Buddhist identity through the style of “Gwa-pan(科判)” shown in the commentaries(注解) on Buddhist scriptures. By analyzing ‘Ge(偈)’ written by King Jeongjo(正祖) and “Eun-jung-gyeong-ge”, in which Chae-jegong(蔡濟恭)ㆍSeo Hyung-Soo(徐瀅修) responded(賡載) to it, I examined that King Jeongjo published 『Bulseol-daebo- bumo-eunjung-gyeong』 and enshrined it at Yongjusa in order to pray for Crown Prince Sado, the birth father of King Jeongjo, to inform the importance of parental grace to the world, and to cultivate traditions. Also, based on the contents of the collections and the annals, it is assumed that the positive perception of Confucian scholars in Joseon toward Bumo-eunjung-gyeong originated from the idea of hyo(孝, filial piety) and boeun(報恩, returning thanks), and the lithograph at Yongjusa would be related to Hwang Woon-jo(黃運祚).
