유기견 쉼터에서의 불연속적이고 파편적인 마주침들: ‘다종의 윤리’로 귀착되지 않는 비판적 에스노그래피를 위한 소고 (Disconnected and Scrappy Encounters in an Animal Shelter: An Essay for Critical Ethnography that Does Not End Up in Multispecies Ethics)

초록

이 글은 최근 인류학 안팎에서 급부상한 인간-비인간 혹은 다종(multispecies) 관계에 대한 관심이 기후 위기 시대에 긴급히 요청되는 ‘다종의 윤리’로 귀결되고 있는 것은 아닌가라는 의구심에서 출발한다. ‘종간(interspecies)’으로 상징되는 인간-비인간관계로의 관심의 이동과 종간 관계 맺기 또는 ‘인간 너머의 사회성’에 대한 부각은 ‘지극히 인간적인 것’으로 물화된 문화적⋅정치경제적 이슈들을 상대적으로 비가시화하고역사, 차이, 불평등 같은 문제들의 의도치 않은 탈각으로 향한다. 이 글은 인류학에서인간-동물(비인간) 관계에 주목한다는 것이 한편으로는 인간과 다른 종들 간 함께–되기⋅ 공진화⋅공번성이라는 문제의식과 그 생태윤리적 함의로 귀착되지 않으면서 다른 한편으로는 자본, 가부장제, 불평등, 차이 등을 무화하지 않을 가능성을 검토한다. 이를 위해 이 글은 한 유기견 쉼터에서 경험한 ‘불연속적이고 파편적’인 마주침들 속에서 이른바 ‘인간 너머’의 세상을 가시화하기 위해 역설적으로 ‘인간 내부’를 더 파고들 필요성이 요청되는 상황에 천착한다. 즉, 이 글은 쉼터에서 스탭들이 수행하는 종간 돌봄을한편으로는 가부장적 자본주의와 ‘종간 연민의 정치’ 안에서, 다른 한편으로는 그 안에완전히 포섭되지 않는 감응적 관계 안에서 의미화해본 후 쉼터의 종간 관계를 ‘차이와불평등의 인터페이스’라는 차원에서 조명해 본다. 궁극적으로 이 상황은 권력, 정치, 불평등, 착취와 같은 문제가, 지극히 ‘인간적인 것’으로서 비인간을 배제하고 있는 것이아니라, 인간-비인간 관계 그 자체와 상호구성적으로 연결돼 있음을 보여준다. 결론에서 이 글은 다종 윤리와 인간⋅비인간의 물화를 넘어서 비판적 에스노그래피가 나아갈방향에 대해 고민해 본다.

영어초록

I begin this essay by intervening in the situation where recent interests in human-animal and multispecies relations often boil down to “multispecies ethics” that are urgently called for in an age of climate crisis. In the turn towards interspecies relations and “more than human sociality,” cultural and political economic matters seem to be radically reified as what is exclusively ‘human,’ while issues of history, difference and inequality slip out of attention. I examine the possibility of an anthropological study of human-animal relation that does not make matters of capital, patriarchy, inequality and difference irrelevant and does not conclude in the problematics of human-animal ‘becoming with,’ ‘co-evolution,’ and/or ‘co-flourishing.’ For this, I focus on the situation of disconnected and scrappy encounters which I had in an animal shelter, which paradoxically demands further examination of “within the human” to understand better the world “beyond the human.” Specifically, I seek to understand interspecies care that is carried out by staff in the shelter, first, under the context of patriarchal capitalism and what I call “politics of interspecies pity;” and then, from affective relationships that are not entirely reducible to them. I also discuss how interspecies relationships in the shelter become the interface of difference and inequality. Overall, this situation reveals that the matter of power, politics, inequality, and exploitation not only not excludes the non-human but also is co-constitutive of human-animal relations. In conclusion, I discuss a possibility of critical ethnography that does not end up in multispecies ethics and the reification of the human and non-human.
