In this study, we examined the story of the replacement, paying attention to the role of the replacement drawn in the classic monogatari and the aunt of The Boy and the Heron.
In Chapter 2, through the Konohanasakuyahime story, which is the source of the story of two sisters, the relationship between the mother and the aunt was found, and the characteristics of the replacement based on similarity were examined. In Chapter 3, the characteristics of Fujitsubo, Murasaki no Ue, and Ukifune, the replacements of Genji Monogatari, and Shikibu no Miya of Sagoromo Monogatari, were examined. In Chapter 4, the characteristics of the story of the replacement in The Boy and the Heron were examined in three categories, focusing on the aunt: first, lineage and appearance; second, subjectivity; and third, a happy ending.
The Boy and the Heron is a work about the adventure of a boy named Mahito, which represents an important rite of passage for his stepmother to accept reality in the confusing situation of being an aunt and to realize that she has to live truthfully through her great-grandfather. In this work, the aunt, who appears as a replacement for the mother, believes that she is doing her best to start a family on behalf of her sister and to help Mahito's adventure and growth.
