초록

본고는 ‘미적인 것’이 미술사학만의 전유물은 아니며 역사학에도 근간을 이루는 범주임을 밝혀내고자하는 취지로 근대 역사학의 성립과 변화, 그리고 신경향을 ‘역사적인 것’과 ‘미적인 것’의 변주를 통해 살펴보았다. 계몽주의 역사서술에서 수사학적으로 혼용되어있던 ‘역사적인 것’과 ‘미적인 것’은 역사주의적 역사학의 탄생과 더불어 과학적 연구와 심미적 서술로 이원화되었으며, 그러한 서술의 시학은 시각 이미지의 전반적 번성으로 인한 재현의 위기에 봉착하여 이미지로서의 역사라는 새로운 차원으로 변모되었다. ‘역사적 사실’에 대한 그릇되고 편협한 이해를 넘어 역사학 자체를 과거를 재현하는 특정한 이미지로 새롭게 규정하는 이른바 시각사 서술은 재현과 현실 간의 존재론적 괴리를 역으로 활용하여 시각 이미지의 매체적 잠재력을 극대화하고자한다. 시각 이미지는 문서자료와는 구별되는 특유의 물질성에 입각하여 사라진 과거에 생명력을 부여하고 그럼으로써 현실에서는 누락된 숨겨진 가능성을 드러낸다. 그럼으로써 ‘역사적인 것’과 ‘미적인 것’은 새로운 결합의 동력을 얻는다. ‘역사학적 숭고’라는 제3의 범주야말로 재현불가능성을 재현하는 역사학 본연의 사명을 일깨운다.

영어초록

This paper is designed to prove that ‘the aesthetical’ is a central category not only of art history, but also of history proper. The establishment and the change of the modern discipline of history are bound up with the long, entangled history of ‘the historical’ and ‘the aesthetical.’ The both categories were once inextricably interwoven in the Enlightenment historical writing, but came to be divided into scientific research and aesthetic description with the advent of the historicist historical writing which has long appeared to be the last bastion of historical truth and was then currently threatened by the so-called “visual turn.” History itself as an image has been offered as a way out, since recent crisis of historical representation was seriously perceived by historical scholarship. It can be called “visual history,” a new methodological concept that treats historical past no longer as a scientific object and rather tends to make use of the ontological gap of reality and representation, so that the innate materiality of visual images could substantialize an alternative reality. By virtue of visual images the lost memories could regain their vitality and lay open their unrealized possibilities. In this way ‘the historical’ and ‘the aesthetical’ could be enabled to rejoin. The “historical sublime,” newly conceptualized as the third category of historical science, reminds us of our discipline’s principal mission of representing the unrepresentable.
