역사적 장소를 어떻게 읽고 해석할 것인가? -덕수궁을 사례로- (How to Understand and Interpret Historical Sites -On Deoksugung Palace-)

초록

본 연구는 역사적 장소에 담긴 역사적 의미를 학생들이 스스로 다양한 관점에서 해석할 수 있도록 프로그램을 개발하고 현장적용을 통해 그 특징을 파악하는데 목적이 있다. 역사적 장소로는 당시의 지배이념이 내재되어 있는 곳이며, 고종과 대한제국에 대한 평가가 상이한 결과 여러 관점에서 역사적 해석이 존재하는 곳인 덕수궁을 선정하였다. 먼저 덕수궁 현장체험학습 프로그램은 관찰-조사-해석의 단계로 구성하였으며 학생들의 활동지 및 학습결과물, 사전․사후 설문지 등을 수집하여 분석하였다. 프로그램은 2019년 1월 서울 지역의 중학교 학생 12명이 참여해 현장 적용되었다. 학생들은 덕수궁의 주요 건축물인 중화전, 석조전, 중명전을 ‘자주국권’, ‘국권침탈(일제침략)’, ‘서양문물의 수용’, ‘일제에 대한 저항’이라는 키워드로 당시 시대상황과 자료의 내용과 연관시켜 맥락화 했다. 덕수궁을 ‘고종과 대한제국의 자주개혁’이라는 기존의 결과론적 역사 해석을 그대로 수용하지 않고, 스스로 덕수궁의 역사적 의미를 해석하였다. 자신을 고종에 감정이입해서 평가하기도 하고, 자료에 제시된 당시의 시대적 상황과 사전 지식과의 맥락에 따라 고종에 대해 평가를 내리기도 하였다. 이것은 학생들이 역사적 장소에서 본 실재와 자료들을 토대로 분석하여 역사해석을 시도한 것이다. 다만 본 연구 결과가 연구 참여자 12명의 활동을 분석한 것으로 추후 역사적 장소에서 이루어지는 학생들의 역사해석 경험을 축적하여 분석하는 연구가 필요하다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to develop a program for interpreting the historical significance of the historical place, Deoksugung Palace, and to explore how students understand and interpret Deoksugung Palace through on-site application. Deoksugung Palace is the place where the ruling ideology of its time is embedded, and it has been historically interpreted from various viewpoints due to different evaluations of Gojong and the Korean Empire. For this study, students observed and investigated the major buildings of Deoksugung Palace and derived historical significance based on given data. In January 2019, 12 middle school students in Seoul participated in the program for on-site application. Through their participation in the program, the students contextualized the major buildings by connecting key words of “independent national rights,” “pillage of national rights (Japanese invasion),” “acceptance of Western civilization” and “resistance against the Japanese invasion” with the data of the circumstances during that time. The students interpreted the historical meaning of Deoksugung Palace by themselves without accepting the existing historical interpretation of “the independence movement of Gojong and the Korean Empire.” They empathized with Gojong for the evaluation, and they also gave the evaluation of Gojong according to the context of the times and prior knowledge. The students attempted to interpret the historical palace by analyzing what they had actually seen and the given data.
