미야자와 겐지 『눈길 건너기(雪渡り)』의 작품구조 연구 (Study on Miyazawa Kenji’s 『Snow Crossing』 structure)

초록

본 연구는 미야자와 겐지(宮沢賢治)의 작품인 『눈길 건너기(雪渡り)』를 중심으로 작품구조의 분석을 통하여 작가가 독자에게 전달하고자 하는 메시지를 파악하는데 그 목표를 두고자 한다. 『눈길 건너기』는 제목에서 보이는 바와 같이 눈은 주요한 요소로서 강조되고 있다. 작품에서 표현하고 있는 눈의 역할은 인간이 걷기 어려운 수수밭에 눈이 내림으로서 그것이 얼어서 걸어 갈 수 있도록 하는 것이다. 본고에서의 눈의 위치 설정은 인간이 삶의 역경을 헤쳐 나갈 수 있도록 하는 자연의 선물이며 또한 눈, 즉 자연은 관망하는 자세를 취하고 그 관망하는 자세는 종교의 가르침과도 서로 관련성을 가지고 있다고 보았다.
이 작품은 첫 번째 이야기와 두 번째 이야기로 나뉘어 있다. 첫 번째 이야기와 두 번째 이야기로 분리한 작가의 의도에 촛점을 맞추어 인간세계의 떡, 여우세계의 수수경단이라는 작품의 주요 소재를 가지고 각각의 이야기의 흐름을 기승전결(起承轉結)의 작품구조로 분석한다. 그리고 두 이야기는 각각의 起承轉結과 각각이 아닌 하나의 연결된 이야기로서의 기승전결(起承轉結)을 가지고 있다고 보고 그 안에 내포되어 있는 이중구조(二重構造)를 통하여 작가의 의도에 접근하는 연구방법을 취하고 있다.
이중구조(二重構造)로 작품을 해석하고자 한다면 작가의 의도 파악을 선결과제로 보고, 첫 번째 이야기에서 문제제기한 사실을 두 번째 이야기에서 해결하고 있으며 첫 번째 이야기를 인간과 여우의 대립관계가 형성되고 있는 현실세계로 본다면 두 번째 이야기는 인간과 여우가 대립하지 않고 사이좋게 살아갈 수 있는 이상적인 세계로 모두가 추구하고자 하는 세계인 것이다. 그 이중구조(二重構造)는 또한 반복적인 5가지 요소를 들어 첫 번째와 두 번째에서 동일 요소로서 작품 안에서 작용하고 있다. 5가지 요소인 떡, 수수경단, 술, 덫, 불을 반복하여 강조한 이유, 숲과 들판의 배경 설정, 눈이라는 소재와 작품의 마지막 장면과의 연관성을 통하여 작품의 이중구조(二重構造)를 고찰하였다.

영어초록

This study focuses on 『Snow Crossing』, written in the 10th year of the Taisho Era by Miyazawa Kenji. The goal of this study is to grasp the message the author wants to convey to readers through the in-depth study of the structure of this story. The tenth year of the Taisho Era, when this story, interpreted from different perspectives, was written, was a significant turning point for the author’s life. Along with the significant religious turning point came the change in his consciousness. Consequently, this study seeks to analyze his mental world by analyzing the structure of the story from the perspective of how his mental word is conveyed through this work.
This study proves that this work is structured into introduction- development- turn- conclusion and interprets the material of the story in terms of a dual structure. This work consists of the first and the second story. These two stories take the form of the introduction- development- turn- conclusion. These two stories, while forming a single piece of work, have different introduction- development- turn- conclusion’s. In addition, the rice cake of the human world and the sorghum rice-balls of the fox world, the two elements being repeated in each story, are analyzed as the significant keywords from the perspective of building belief and trust. In addition to the rice cake and the sorghum rice-balls, this study analyzes the three lessons being repeated in the two stories as the dual structure. The material of the story as evinced in the title—the status of the snow, the snow fields forming the background, and the woods—appears to reveal the structural dualism and is studied in depth.
