알파걸 탐색과 학습관련 심리적 특성 분석 (Exploration of α-girls and the Psychological Characteristics of Their Learning)

초록

본 연구는 Kindlon이 제시하고 있는 알파걸의 존재를 우리나라 상황에서 경험적으로 검증해보고, 이들이 학습 상황에서 어떠한 인지적, 정의적 특성을 보이는지를 구체적으로 탐색하는데 주목적을 두었다. 문헌검토를 통해 알파걸의 선정기준을 확인하고 한국교육개발원에서 실시하고 있는 한국교육종단연구 1～3차년도 자료를 활용하여 총 6,065명의 학생의 성취도, 학습동기, 자기주도적 학습 등을 분석하였다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, Kindlon의 선정기준을 적용한 결과 우리나라 여학생의 7.8%가 알파걸로 분류되었다. 둘째, HLM 분석결과 알파걸의 학업성취도의 초기값이 높으며 성적우수집단에 비해 학업성취도의 변화에 있어 더 높은 성장률을 보여주었다. 셋째, 알파걸은 학습활동을 통해 보상을 얻고자하는 도구적 동기 뿐 아니라 학습에 대한 내재적 동기도 높은 특징이 있었다. 또한 자신의 학습과정에 적극적으로 참여하고, 자신의 인지, 동기, 행동을 스스로 조절하는 자기조절 능력을 형성하고 있는 것으로 확인되었다. 본 연구의 알파걸 선정의 타당성 검증을 위해, 수학효능감, 부모의 지원, 양육태도 등이 추가로 분석되었는데, 알파걸은 높은 교육열을 가진 부모로부터 전폭적인 학업적, 정서적 지지를 받고 있는, 건강한 학업정서를 지닌 여학생이라는 Kindlon의 주장을 재확인할 수 있었다. 이상의 결과들이 학습 상황에서 시사하는 바가 논의되고 있다.

영어초록

In this study, we examine α-girls in Korea and investigate their cognitive and affective characteristics in academic settings. We set up criteria to screen α-girls through a literature review and analyzed their achievement, academic motivation, and self-regulated learning. The Korean Education Longitudinal study data of KEDI from 2005-2007 was used for this purpose. The results are as follows:
First, based on Kindlon's criteria, 7.8% of Korean female students were classified as α-girls. Second, the initial value of academic achievements of an α-girl were high, and their growth rates were positive in comparison to groups of other high achievers. Third, they scored high not only on external motivation but also on intrinsic motivation. They participate actively in their learning activities and regulate their cognition, motivation and behavior to achieve their goals. To validate our selection criteria for α-girls, we analyzed their mathematical abilities, relationships with their parents, and attitudes toward child-rearing. The results confirmed Kindlon's claims that an α-girl is a female student who has supportive parents. We then discussed the implications of our results.
